Bio Notes: William Waddington (1816-1891) was born in Padiham, Lancashire and opened an office in Burnley. Ultimately his practice extended across much of South Lancashire with an immense number of schools and chapels for the Wesleyan Methodists. In 1877, he took his eldest son, William Angelo Waddington (1848-1907)into partnership and about this time opened a second office in Manchester.

Following his father’s death, William Angelo Waddington continued the Manchester office under the style William Waddington & Son for several years until he entered into partnership with Frank Brookhouse Dunkerley, (1868-1951) of Timperley, Cheshire about 1900.

Major schemes by Waddington, Son & Dunkerley included the Wesleyan Central Hall, Sheffield, an extensive scheme accommodating 2,500 people and comprising a central hall, with smaller halls and other buildings in the Renaissance style which was erected in George-street; at a cost of £40,000 in 1904; St Mary’s Church, Nelson, Lancashire; the Northern Assurance Building, Albert Square; and the "Daily Mail" building in Deansgate, Manchester.

The firm also won the second premium for their designs, out of about 75 sent in, for the Harrogate Municipal Offices in 1902, and they were one out of the twelve nominated to take part in the competition for the Manchester New Infirmary in Oxford Road. In 1904, they were one of the nine chosen to join the final competition for the Wesleyan Church House, Westminster; and were one of the six local firms who were invited to submit designs for the new Stock Exchange, Manchester.

The partnership was dissolved in January 1906 and William Angelo Waddington died a little over a year later at his residence in Knutsford, Cheshire.
