Bio Notes: Herbert Kitchener Calder was articled to Robert Henderson Motion of Dunfermline in June 1915. His apprenticeship was interrupted by military service from March 1917to October 1919 but he spent four months of the following year completing his training with Motion. He subsequently moved to Aberdeen where he joined the firm of Tawse & Allan in January 1921, remaining there until August 1922 (the dates given in his RIBA nomination papers). Thereafter he studied full-time at Aberdeen School of Architecture until 1926. On 29 November of the latter year he was admitted ARIBA, his proposers being Robert Gordon Wilson Junior, John Wilson Walker and Alexander Marshall Mackenzie.

By 1950 Calder had a post with the Ministry of Works in Edinburgh.
