Basic Biographical Details Name: | James Bennett | Designation: | | Born: | c. 1886 | Died: | 28 November 1916 | Bio Notes: | The son of David Bennett, architect of Glasgow and his wife Margaret, James Bennett was articled to John Houston of Dunfermline from 1903 to 1907, attending classes in that town. He then moved to Glasgow where he enrolled at Glasgow School of Art and was appointed assistant to Miller & Black. He studied full-time at the School from 1908 to 1911, and in the latter year was senior medallist in design and received a School travelling scholarship. In the same year he was appointed assistant to William Cowie in Ayr. He was awarded the Alexander Thomson Travelling Studentship in 1912, enabling him to travel in north and south Italy, south France and Paris from April to October, his travels prior to that date having been limited to Scotland and England. On his return he joined the office of John Burnet & Son, and he was still there at the time of his admittance as ARIBA in late 1915, his proposers being Alexander Nisbet Paterson, John Watson, and John James Burnet, who wrote of Bennett in his supporting statement: 'I know him to have been an earnest & successful student at the Glasgow School of Art. Since he entered my office he has assisted me in important public & private work & has proved himself an able & sympathetic assistant.' His nomination papers give a home address of Hillview, Saline, Fife and also state that he had been RIBA Silver Medallist in 1914.
In 1916, he enlisted as Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers and died, age 30, on 28 November of that year.
