Basic Biographical Details Name: | John Grenfell Hird (or Hurd) | Designation: | | Born: | 4 June 1915 | Died: | Early 2009 | Bio Notes: | John Grenfell Hird (or Hurd) was born on 4 June 1915 and began the diploma course at Glasgow School of Art in 1933. In 1935 he worked in the offices of Thomas Harold Hughes, Eric Sutherland and Colonel George Hunter Gardner-McLean. He was an Associate of the Glasgow Institute of Architects in 1939-40 and was elected ARIBA in 1940, his proposers being Thomas Harold Hughes, Eric Sutherland and William James Smith. At that date his address was 102 Bath Street which was the business address at that time of Eric Alexander Sutherland where he was working at that date as an assistant to Sutherland. At the time of his election to the RIBA he was working as an assistant with Colonel George Hunter Gardner-McLean.
Around 1953-54 he was working in Dudley with Messrs Webb & Gray. In 1955 when he was elected ARIAS he was living in Staffordshire. By 1956 he was in partnership with Gerald Stanley in Cardiff. He remained in Wales later (at least by 1965) practising with Graham Brooks as Hird & Brooks. He was elected FRIBA in 1968.
