Basic Biographical Details Name: | Derek Selby Wright | Designation: | | Born: | 4 July 1910 | Died: | 18 April 1972 | Bio Notes: | Derek Selby Wright was born on 4 July 1910, the son of Vernon Oswald Wright, musician, and his wife Anna Gilberta selby. He commenced the five-year diploma course at Edinburgh College of Art in October 1927. From 1928 to 1930 he was a pupil in the office of Dick Peddie & Walker Todd, and he subsequently spent a year in that of Stewart Kaye. He obtained his diploma in July 1935 and passed the Professional Practice exam in Edinburgh in July 1936. During that year he again worked in Kaye's practice, by then Stewart Kaye & Walls. Wright was admitted ARIBA on 11 January 1937, his proposers being William James Walker Todd, John Begg, and L Stuart Stanley of the Bartlett School of Architecture. Stanley also witnessed Wright's declaration accepting his admittance, which was signed on 21 January that year, suggesting that Wright was in London and perhaps studying at the Bartlett at that time. However, both on his nomination papers and in the RIBA Kalendar of 1939-40 Wright's home address is given as 12 Saxe Coburg Place, Edinburgh.
He died on 18 April 1972 at Edingtomn Cottage Hospital, North Berwick.
