Basic Biographical Details Name: | James Findlay Coull | Designation: | | Born: | 19 February 1909 | Died: | 8 November 1961 | Bio Notes: | James Findlay Coull was born on 19 February 1909, the son ofCharles Alexander Middleton Coull, postman, and his wife Jessie Ross Heddle. He commenced his articles in March 1926 in an unspecified firm where he gained experience of 'construction, specification, quantities, levelling etc.'. During this period he attended morning and evening classes at Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot-Watt College. He commenced independent practice in September 1932, concurrently continuing his studies by attending two years' day classes as Andrew Grant Scholar at the College of Art. He also received a minor bursary for measuring in St Andrews. He obtained his diploma and passed the Professional Practice exam in June 1934, and was admitted ARIBA on 3 December that year, his proposers being James Alexander Arnott, Arthur Forman Balfour Paul and Thomas Forbes Maclennan. He was also an Associate of the Edinburgh Architectural Association. His nomination papers state that his work prior to that date had consisted of 'designing large Church Hall to be used as church for some years to come, alterations to houses, garages etc.'. Both home and office were at 228 Easter Road, Leith at that time. He later had a post with the Ministry of Works.
