Basic Biographical Details

Name: Robert McConnell
Designation:
Born: 1 July 1805
Died: 29 November 1867
Bio Notes: Robert McConnell was born in Glasgow on 1 July 1805, the son of John McConnell and Janet Pinkerton. He was architectural ironfounder rather than architect, but probably had some training either in architecture or in civil engineering. In the 1850s he developed patent beams with wrought iron flanges and cast-iron webs which could readily be assembled to whatever length was required and were less susceptible to sudden failure in the event of overloading or casting defects. He died at Ventnor on the Isle of Wight on 29 November 1867, leaving moveable estate of £15,975 3s 3d.
