Basic Biographical Details

Name: John Laird
Designation:
Born: 5 January 1868
Died: 10 March 1937
Bio Notes: John Laird was born at 153 Greenhead, Glasgow, on 5 January 1868, the son of George Laird, then a master Joiner and his wife Margaret Donald. His early training is not yet known but may have been as a joiner rather than as an architect. He married Mary Jessie (or Jane) Lillie sometime before 1898 when their son George was born.

In 1900-1901 Laird's much younger brother James William Laird, born 1880, commenced independent practice at the early age of twenty. By 1904 James had taken John into partnership as J W & J Laird, probably to provide the necessary practical experience. This partnership lasted until about 1925 when John withdrew to take his son George into partnership as John Laird & Son.

John Laird died of abdominal cancer at 14 Balmoral Drive, Cambuslang, on 10 March 1937, the practice being continued by his son George.
