Bio Notes: Hugh Allen Inglis Valentine was born in Dundee on 1 May 1904. He moved to Canada early in life and was educated in Montreal at Rosemount School and Montreal High School. He was a pupil of Ross & Macdonald from 1920 to 1927 and studied at McGill University from 1923, obtaining a BArch in 1928. In the latter year he joined the office of David Robertson Brown of Montreal. A year later he moved to Wilmington, Delaware where he worked for William E Martin, returning to Brown's office in 1930. He left Brown in 1931. In 1935 he took an appointment in the architectural office of the Bell Telephone Company, remaining there until 1945 when he entered into partnership with Scottish-born Percy Erskine Nobbs, who also took his son Francis John Nobbs into partnership in the same year. After five years with Nobbs he rejoined the Bell Telephone Company as chief architect.

Valentine joined the Province of Quebec Association of Architects in 1934, served as President in 1957, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. He lectured at McGill School of Architecture between 1959 and 1967. He retired in 1970 and died in 1978.
