Basic Biographical Details Name: | North & Robin | Designation: | | Born: | 1903 | Died: | Before 1915 | Bio Notes: | North & Robin were a London-based practice who entered the Perth City Hall competition in 1907. Sydney Vincent North was born at Acton, London, in 1872, the son of the architect David Henry North and his wife Agnes. Articled to his father between 1889 and 1897 and later assistant to David Wilcock, he also attended classes at the Architectural Association, passing the RIBA qualifying examination in 1900.
In 1903 North merged his practice with that of Charles Collas Robin (born about 1876) who had also commenced practice in 1899 after and apprenticeship with Alfred Frampton and a period as assistant first to W A Finch and then H Whiteman Rising. The partnership enjoyed almost immediate success, being awarded first premium in the Heywood Library competition from the 62 sets of drawings submitted.
From very early in the partnership North & Robin specialised in department store and shop design being closely associated with Shop Properties Ltd, a subsidiary of Hiller Parker. This brought about their employment by F W Woolworth & Co Ltd in 1913-19 and, slightly later by C & A.
In November 1915 Robin enlisted in the 28th Battalion London Regiment (the Artists’ Rifles) and died on active service in 1916. Sometime before that they had merged their practice with that of the older William John Wilsdon (born 1866) as North Robin & Wilsdon, later North & Partners – see separate entries.
