He was articled to James Thomson & Sons of Airdrie and remained as assistant for three years, subsequently seeking further experience in other unidentified offices before commencing independent practice in Airdrie in 1887. A few years later he was made Assessor of the Burgh of Airdrie. He was elected to the Airdrie School Board c.1897, becoming its Chairman ten years later. He was admitted LRIBA in the mass intake of 20 July 1911, with Alexander McGibbon as his sole proposer and with the additional support of William Thomson, the Procurator Fiscal of Hamilton, who had known him since he was a child. At that date his business address was 12 Broomknoll Street, Airdrie, and he was living at 'Mossgiel' in the same town.
John Scotland & Son is the continuation of the practice of John Scotland who died on 26 November 1926. John Bruce's son, George Bruce Scotland, continued the practice from the same address in Airdrie until his death in 1953.
