He studied with architectural artist W Richardson of Camden Town, London from 1861 to 1865, and returned to Leeds in the latter year to commence his articles with his father, with whom he entered into partnership in 1871 along with his brother William Joshua Belton Perkin. From 1877 he worked in partnership with George Bertram Bulmer. He was President of Leeds Architectural Society in 1888-89 and was admitted FRIBA in 1891.
