He was articled to Archibald Macpherson and was later his chief assistant while attending classes at the School of Applied Art. He gained further experience in an unspecified office in Glasgow before emigrating in 1904 to Toronto where he built up a practice and specaliised in domestic work. His Scotsman obituarist notes that his work was marked by 'thoughful and efficient planning'.
