Bio Notes: James Mitchell was born in 1876 in Edinburgh. He was articled to Archibald Macpherson and was later his chief assistant while attending classes at the School of Applied Art. He gained further experience in an unspecified office in Glasgow before emigrating in 1904 to Toronto where he built up a practice and specaliised in domestic work. His Scotsman obituarist notes that his work was marked by 'thoughful and efficient planning'.

Mitchell retired to Edinburgh in c.1938 owing to ill-health and died in November 1940.
