Basic Biographical Details

Name: Maitland Dalrymple Wardrop
Designation:
Born: 8 October 1859
Died: 6 January 1914
Bio Notes: Maitland Dalrymple Wardrop was born on 8 October 1859, the fourth son of James Maitland Wardrop and his wife Anna Maria Dundas, 5th daughter of James Dundas of Dundas Castle. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy from 1870 to 1874 and may have been articled to an architect other than his father ('in an architect's office, Edinburgh'), subsequently gaining experience in an unspecified London architect's office - probably George Edmund Street's - in 1879-81. Although the Wardrop & Reid practice seems to have been less affected by the recession following the City of Glasgow Bank crash than most, he emigrated to Virginia, USA to farm from 1881 until 1885; it is not know what he did for the next three years, but in 1888-90 he attended the University of Durham, becoming LTh, University College, Durham, a deacon in 1891 and a priest in 1892. He successively served at St George's, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1891-93; at St George's, Barron, 1893-95; at Trowbridge, 1895-1902; at Holy Trinity, St Marylebone, 1902-04; and at Wirksworth, 1904-05. In 1906 he was appointed chaplain at Trevandrum, Travancore, returning to England as Vicar of St Margaret's, Collier Street, Rochdale. He died on 6 January 1914: whether he practised architecture in any form after 1881 is not known.
