Bio Notes: James Spalding Bennet was articled to Thomas Purves Marwick in September 1907, studying at Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot-Watt College. At the end of his apprenticeship in May 1912 he was appointed to the Scottish National Art Survey Studentship, on completion of which in October 1912 he entered the office of Rowand Anderson & Paul as junior assistant. He was awarded a travelling scholarship in May 1914 which enabled him to tour England. In October that year he enlisted in the armed forces.

He was demobilised in January 1919 and rejoined Rowand Anderson & Paul as senior assistant four months later. He was still there when he applied for admittance as ARIBA in March 1921, and he was admitted in the middle of that year, his proposers being John Watson, John Wilson and Harold Ogle Tarbolton. No further details are yet known.
