Basic Biographical Details Name: | John Halley | Designation: | | Born: | 1854 | Died: | | Bio Notes: | John Halley wasd born in Paisley, Renfrewshire in about 1854. He was an architect's apprentice in 1871, livning as a boarder in Cumberland Street, Edinburgh.
He formed a partnership c.1874 in Glasgow with James A Knox, who had commenced practice at 4 South Albion Street c.1870. Knox disappears from the directories in 1876, but the practice name remained Knox & Halley until c.1880 when Halley practised in his own name only at 75 (or 78?) West Nile Street. However the practice may not have flourished as in the 1881 Census Halley is recorded as being in London and his profession as 'stockbroker'.
By 1891 Halley had moved to Camberwell, London where he was living with his wife Elizabeth Dunlop who was also Scottish and their family. He had returned to architecture at that date. Ten years later, in the Census of 1901 he was staying as a visitor at Darroch, Luss, with various ladies of the Saunders family and is described as a retired architect. Is it possible that they were relatives of his wife? | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 32, West George Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1874 * | | | | 129, St Vincent Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1874 | After 1877 | | | 209, St Vincent Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Private(?) | c. 1875 | | | | 78 (or 75?), West Nile Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1880 * | | | | 5, Aldersgate Street, London, England | Private | 1881 | | | | 9, The Gardens, Camberwell, London, England | Private | 1891 | | |
