Basic Biographical Details Name: | James Reid | Designation: | | Born: | 17 September 1892 | Died: | 17 February 1978 | Bio Notes: | James Reid was born on 17 September 1892, the son of Murdoch Reid, irondriller, and his wife Devina McNaughton. He was articled to Robert Keith & Son of Dundee in 1909, studying at Dundee Technical College and School of Art where he gained a first class diploma. He moved to Glasgow in 1914, joining the firm of Brand & Lithgow as assistant. He subsequently worked as architect to Stewart & Lloyds of Clyde Works, Coatbridge, from 1917 to 1926, presumably carrying out extensions to their manufacturing premises there, before joining the practice of J Oswald & Son in Newcastle upon Tyne as chief assistant in the latter year. He was made a partner in 1937, although the practice title remained unchanged.
He applied for admittance as LRIBA in 1939 and was admitted on 4 February 1941, proposed by his former tutor Patrick Hill Thoms of Dundee and the then president and secretary of the Northern Architectural Association. His nomination papers state that prior to that time he had travelled in Holland, Belgium and France.
He later returned to Scotland and was living in Meigle, Perthshire immediately prior to his death on 17 February 1978.
