Basic Biographical Details Name: | Alexander Tough | Designation: | | Born: | 30 May 1907 | Died: | 16 August 1983 | Bio Notes: | Alexander Tough was born on 30 May 1907, the son of Alexander Tough, executive officer, and his wife Christina Emslie Duncan. He commenced his studies on the diploma course at Aberdeen School of Architecture in September 1922. He was articled to A Marshall Mackenzie & Son from August 1924 until August 1927, remaining as an assistant for a further year before returning to the School to study on the post-diploma course. He passed the qualifying exam in July 1929 and received his diploma two months later, whereupon he returned to the Marshall Mackenzie practice. He left in January 1930, seemingly in order to join the London branch of the practice, Wigglesworth & Mackenzie. He was admitted ARIBA in mid-1930, his proposers being Alexander George Robertson Mackenzie, Herbert Hardy Wigglesworth and Percy Burnell Tubbs.
By 1955 Tough had a post with the Ministry of Works in London. In 1960 he was working in HM Ministry of Works in Singapore. By 1970 he had returned to Scotland and had a post in the City Architect's Department in Aberdeen.
Tough died on 16 August 1983.
