He remained with the same firm for the full five years of his apprenticeship, by the end of which it had become Wylie, Shanks & Wylie, and on receiving his course certificate in June 1937 joined the office of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway Company as an assistant, returning to his studies at the School of Architecture and Technical College in September 1938 to obtain his diploma. He passed the Professional Practice exam in Edinburgh in December 1940 and was admitted ARIBA on 4 March 1941, his proposers being Thomas Harold Hughes and William James Smith of the Glasgow School of Architecture, and Andrew Graham Henderson. By that time he had joined the staff of Rolls-Royce Ltd in Glasgow as chief architect.
He worked on the temporary housing programme for the Ministry of Works in 1946, and from 1947 onwards practised in partnership with two unidentified Wilsons in Motherwell as Wilson, Hamilton & Wilson. The most likely candidates for these two Wilsons are as follows: Andrew Victor Wilson and his son Andrew James B Wilson. Andrew Victor Wilson opened business on his own account before 1904 in Windmillhill Street. The office was transferred to 11 Merry Street in February of that year. He died in 1946 and it would appear that Horace Hamilton joined Andrew James Branks Wilson at that point took over the practice at that point. The practice office of the Wilsons at 9 Calder Street was retained as the office.
Hamilton was elected FRIBA in 1955.
The practice was still in operation in 1970 with Hamilton as senior partner. Donald Fraser, Iain Black and Fraser A Young were all partners at this time. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 9, Calder Street, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Business | 1947 | After 1955 | Certainly at 9 Calder Street in 1952 (Builder 30 May 1952, 828) | | Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1947 | After 1955 | | | 1, Springkell Avenue, Uddingston, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Business(?) | 1950 * | | | | 153, Oxford Street, Gorbals, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1951 * | After 1955 | | | 5, Woodside Terrace, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | Before 1961 | After 1981 | |
