He was articled to Edwin L Williamson of Aberdeen in 1924. He attended day classes at Robert Gordon's College from 1926 to 1928 but resumed his position in Williamson's office in 1929 whilst completing his studies. He was given an exemption from the RIBA final examination in June 1930 and passed the Professional Practice exam the following month in Edinburgh. He was admitted ARIBA at the end of that year, his proposers being Robert Leslie Rollo, James Brown Nicol and Robert Gordon Wilson Junior. His nomination papers give a business address of 367 Union Street, Aberdeen, which was the location of Nicol's office at that time, suggesting that he was working for him; his private address at that time was 42 Union Grove.
Stephen died suddenly at his home in Cults on 21 January 1949.
