He was articled to Thomas J Munro of Inverness in 1924. He attended day classes at Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen from 1927 to 1930, achieving an exemption from the RIBA final exams and passing the Professional Practice examination in Edinburgh in the latter year. He was admitted ARIBA in early 1931, his proposers being Robert Leslie Rollo, Robert Gordon Wilson Junior and James Brown Nicol. His nomination papers give a business address of 367 Union Street, Aberdeen, which was the location of Nicol's office at that time, suggesting that he was working for him; his private address at that time was Smithton, Culloden, near Inverness.
In the mid-1930s he was chief assistant with Carruthers Ballantyne & Cox.
