Basic Biographical Details Name: | Roderick Hildegar Baxter | Designation: | | Born: | 1871 | Died: | | Bio Notes: | Roderick Hildegar Baxter was born in 1871 and educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh. He was articled to John Wallace in 1888 and attended the Edinburgh Architectural Association classes and Heriot-Watt College. At the end of his articles in 1891 he went to Stockton on Tees as assistant to Henry Weatherill. In 1893 he moved to Rochdale as assistant to Smith & Cross, becoming Cross's partner in 1898 although the firm's name remained unchanged. He was admitted LRIBA in the mass intake of 20 July 1911, his sole proposer being James Muir Calder. The office address at that date was Town Hall Chambers, South Parade, Rochdale, and by that time Baxter had competed in two national competitions, winning a bronze medal and the Queen's Prize. The practice consisted principally of schools, houses, mills and business premises.
