From September 1926 until June 1929 he studying full-time at the Aberdeen School of Architecture, Robert Gordon's College, passing the qualifying exam in the latter month, and was admitted ARIBA in 1929, his proposers being Wittet, James Brown Nicol and John Alexander Ogg Allan.
By 1950 Sutherland had moved to Potter's Bar in Middlesex.
