Basic Biographical Details Name: | William Arthur Smith Cormack | Designation: | | Born: | 27 March 1901 | Died: | c. 1982(?) | Bio Notes: | William Arthur Smith Cormack was born on 27 March 1901 and was articled to George Bennett Mitchell, studying at the Architecture Department of Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen. He was awarded the Byre Scholarship (£50) in June 1925 and received a travelling scholarship (£120) in June 1928, gaining his post-diploma that month and passing the RIBA qualifying exam the following month. He was admitted ARIBA around the end of 1928, his proposers being Robert Gordon Wilson Junior, John Alexander Ogg Allan and John Ross McMillan. At that time he was living at Braemoray, Lossiemouth. In 1930 he was Neala Bursar.
By 1939-40 he had taken a teaching post in the Department of Architecture & Building, Essex Technical College, Walthamstow, London. By the mid-1950s his address is given as HM Inspector, Ministry of Education, initially in Bath and later in Harrogate.
He retired from the RIBA in 1962 but when he moved to a smaller house in Aberdeen in the early 1970s enquired if he would need to rejoin the Institute in order to draw up plans for an extension to the house. There is no record of whether he rejoined. He moved to Gatehouse-of Fleet at some point in the early 1970s.
