Basic Biographical Details Name: | Arthur Shields Fitzgerald | Designation: | | Born: | 5 December 1897 | Died: | 1 February 1972 | Bio Notes: | Arthur Shields Fitzgerald was born on 5 December 1897, the son of John Fitzgerlad, post office sorter, and his wife Anne Shields. He was articled to Mills & Shepherd of Dundee in October 1913, studying at Dundee Technical College and School of Art. His apprenticeship was interrupted by war service but he completed it in February 1920 and remained with the same firm for a further year, leaving them to join the office of Peter Sinclair of Methil in March 1921. After two years with Sinclair he moved back to Dundee to work for James Findlay, leaving him a further two years later to return to Mills & Shepherd. In November 1929 he again left Mills & Shepherd, moving to Perth to join the firm of Smart, Stewart & Mitchell. He was still an assistant with them at the time of his admittance as LRIBA in early 1931, his proposers being his former and current employers John Donald Mills, Godfrey Daniel Bower Shepherd and Donald Alexander Stewart.
Fitzgerald died on 1 February 1972 at his home in Perth.
