Basic Biographical Details

Name: Thomas Scott
Designation:
Born: 25 October 1898
Died: 10 September 1982
Bio Notes: Thomas Scott was born on 25 October 1898 in Dunfermline, the son of Willimam scott, boiler inspector, and his wife Tamar Colvin. He was articled to Ure & Beveridge, architects and surveyors of that town, in January 1913. He served in the armed forces in Britain and France from October 1915, and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He survived the war, however, returning in January 1919 to his home town where he obtained a post in April that year as draughtsman to James T Scobie, subsequently being promoted to chief draughtsman. Whilst working in Scobie's office he attended classes at Heriot-Watt College.

In September 1925 he emigrated to Lagos to join the Public Works Department there, working as chief assistant to the senior architect Henry A Porter and deputising as acting senior architect during Porter's various absences from the office, as well as devoting time to the teaching of architectural subjects to his fellow employees.

Scott was admitted LRIBA in early 1931, his proposers being Porter, Robert Stirling Reid and the then secretary of the Edinburgh Architectural Association. He was still in the same office when he was elevated to FRIBA on 13 February 1940, proposed by Porter and two others who have yet to be identified, Porter having returned to Britain by that time.

Scott remained in Lagos until after 1950 but had retired by 1960, returned to Scotland and settled in Dollar. He died on 10 September 1982 at Perth Royal Infirmary. His wife had predeceased him. His last years were spent living in Perth with his daughter and her family.
