Bio Notes: The practice of Gelder & Kitchen was founded by (Sir) Alfred Gelder (1855-1941) who was active in politics, being a councillor in Hull from 1895 and Mayor of the city 1898-1903, serving five consecutive terms, Alderman from 1912 and Liberal MP for Brigg 1910-1918. He was Knoghted in 1903 and was active in the slum clearance and development in Hull for which he designed several buildings. He was granted the frredom of theBorough in 1930. He had formed a partnership with Llewellyn Kitchen in the 1890s. Kirchen was from Manchester abd worked in several firms there before going to Hull as Gelder's chief assistant in about 1892. He retired in 1947 and died the following year. Gelder was an active Wesleyan and designed extensively for them.
