He moved to Forres sometime after his marriage to Elizabeth Macfie in Rothesay, Bute on 17 October 1889 by whom he had three sons and a daughter. Details of his early training and years are lacking but he appears in Forres as an 'architect and building inspector' and was active there from the late 1890s being involved with the sale of land for road widening in May 1897. He was an active Freemason and a member of Forres Town Council.
