He was articled to W W Knowles (?) of Sydney from 1889 to 1893, during which period he studied at Sydney Architectural Association. He came to Scotland in 1893, first as assistant to John Hutchison and then Clarke & Bell, both in Glasgow, in the following year. He then moved to London to work for Frederick Meir, again only for a year. He returned to Glasgow to work for James Chalmers in 1895 but later in the year he found a place in the office of the London theatre specialists Sachs & Woodrow. In that same year he passed the qualifying exam and was admitted ARIBA on 8 June 1896, his proposers being Frederic Richard Farrow of London, George Henry Bibby of Nottingham and Frederick William Tarring of London. At that date he was living in Canada at Beechwood, Barrhead, Alberta, but by the following year he was back in England at 2 Guildford Street, Brighton.
