Basic Biographical Details Name: | William Petrie | Designation: | | Born: | c. 1847 | Died: | | Bio Notes: | William Petrie was born in Edinburgh about 1847, the son of William Petrie, stone mason, and his wife Isabella. He was probably either a pupil or an assistant of Peddie & Kinnear as he designed in a Scots baronial manner related to theirs. In the 1871 census he is described as 'architectural draughtsman'.
It is not absolutely clear when he entered the service of the Bank of Scotland's Property Department, but his salary was increased from £150 to £175 in 1878 when he was described as the bank's clerk of works. He became seriously ill probably from over-work, and was probably hospitalised in a mental institution by 11 November 1880 when his service was formally terminated, his wife and family being allowed £87 10s, a half year's pay. If he was hospitalised it cannot have been for long as he is recorded in the 1881 census as being a clerk of works and in the 1891 census as a joiner. He does not appear in the 1901 census.
