Basic Biographical Details Name: | John Grahame Peat | Designation: | | Born: | 1828 or 1829 | Died: | 25 February 1897 | Bio Notes: | John Grahame (spelt Graham in his will) Peat was born in Alloa in 1828 or 1829, the son of Patrick Peat, commercial traveller and Bethia Grahame. He was apprenticed to Brown & Carrick, probably c.1845 and certainly before 1853 when the partnership was dissolved. Thereafter he appears to have been in Melbourne, Australia, with a Mr Burns, with whom he designed the façade of the Theatre Royal at Melbourne (no longer extant: date not traced and the record of his time in Australia is unclear). In 1863 he commenced independent practice at 60 Cadzow Street, Hamilton at the age of thirty-four, having married Jeanie Fleming at Tradeston on 24 December 1862. A son John George was born c.1864, and another, William G, followed c.1865, both born in Hamilton. In 1867 or 1868, in Hamilton, Peat married his second wife, Jeanie McLaren, a hosier at Argyll Arcade in Glasgow who presumably had means of her own.
By 1873-74 Peat was in partnership with Robert Duncan, their office initially being at 157 St Vincent Street, Glasgow. William G Peat, who studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1883 to 1887, entered his father's practice, which continued under the title of Grahame Peat & Duncan until c.1890. Peat died at Hamilton of a cerebral haemorrhage on 25 February 1897 at the age of sixty-eight. He left estate of £433 14s. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Melbourne, Australia | Business | After 1845 | Before 1863 | | | 60, Cadzow Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Private/business(?) | 1863 | After 1868 | | | Portland Park, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Private | After 1868 | 1897 | | | 157, St Vincent Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | Before 1869 | After 1875 | | | 205, Hope Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | Before 1879 | After 1890 | |
