Basic Biographical Details

Name: William Paterson
Designation:
Born: c. 1802
Died: 1851 or 1852
Bio Notes: William Paterson was possibly the younger brother or other relative of James Paterson who appears to have been a pupil of George Angus in Edinburgh and who was sent to Dundee to supervise the building of the Seminaries. William Patrson was born in about 1802 in Carnwath, Lanarkshire.

James died on 18 February 1838 before it was completed and was buried in Constitution Road Cemetery. The practice was continued by William Paterson who came from Edinburgh to take over the building of the Watt Institute. By the time of the 1841 Census, if not before, he had moved to Dundee. William's office was at 7 Cowgate (initially recorded as 7 Tannage Court, Cowgate, Dundee) which was both home and office at that date.

On 16 June 1845 Paterson was elected a director of the newly formed Dundee Cemetery Company. Paterson was married to Barbara and they had one daughter, Catherine (born 1828) who was a 'cutter' by trade.

William Paterson seems to have died in the early 1850s and does not appear in the Post Office Directory for 1853-54.
