Basic Biographical Details

Name: James Ross
Designation:
Born: c. 1781
Died: 1853
Bio Notes: James Ross was born c.1781 and appears to have been Archibald Simpson's clerk of works at Stracathro. He settled there, perhaps with the promise of local estate work, as he was described as 'architect' at Huntly Hill when his son Alexander was born in 1834 and again as 'architect' in heritors' records for the parish of Dun. In 1833 he moved to Inverness to complete some further works by Archibald Simpson and established an episcopal church connection, designing churches for that denomination at Inverness in 1840 and Portsoy in 1841.

Ross died in 1853 at the age of seventy-two. His will was registered on 26 March 1856. His son Alexander Ross, then aged nineteen, took over the practice.
