Basic Biographical Details Name: | John Notman | Designation: | | Born: | 1778 | Died: | 1861 | Bio Notes: | John Notman was born in 1778 and although he was a very good draughtsman he practised mainly as a clerk of works rather than an architect. He was based at Kirkurd, Peeblesshire when his son William was born in 1809 and was probably engaged on the building of Stobo for Archibald and James Elliot. He certainly acted for the Elliots in their works for the Duke of Atholl at Blair Castle, Dunkeld House and Dunkeld Cathedral; for William Burn at Abdie Church; and for George Angus at a church in Kirkcaldy, 1828. He may have acted in a similar capacity for Playfair. One of the drawings for arcading at Dunkeld Cathedral is signed Walter Notman but it is not clear whether he was a son or a brother.
Notman was a brother of the quarrymaster David Notman whose son John Notman (1810-61) had a distinguished career in Philadelphia, USA. He worked for William Henry Playfair and his early American work is markedly Playfair-influenced. The elder John Notman died in 1861. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Kirkurd, Peeblesshire, Scotland(?) | Private | 1809 | | | | Northfield Cottage, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | c. 1820 | 1861 | |
