Bio Notes: George Paterson was born in Langholm in 1846, the son of Thomas Paterson, journeyman mason, and his wife Margaret Instant. By 1851 Thomas Paterson was in Hamilton working as superintendent of works for the Duke. George Paterson worked as a groom in the Chamberlain's (Factor's) Office and Outbuildings. On the death of his father he took over as clerk of works. In 1871 he is described as 'architect to His Grace'. In the Glasgow Herald of 15 May 1885 he is listed as 'Mr George Paterson, Clerk of Works' at the funeral of the 12th Duke.

In 1874 George Paterson married John Ann Cullen [sic] who was a local girl. He continued in the employment of the Duke until at least the 1890s. He is recorded in the Census of 1901 as being 'master of works (retired). He died in Uddingston on 1 December 1902. The value of his moveable estate was £631 3s 3d.
