Basic Biographical Details

Name: Alexander Munro
Designation:
Born:
Died:
Bio Notes: Alexander Munro was an assistant in John Herbertson's office in Glasgow, appearing in the directories at his address in 1848; Gildard describes him as having succeeded John Baird in that position, implying a date of about 1845. Around 1851 Munro won the competition for Allan Glen's school, which established his independent practice. No further important commissions seem to have come his way; according to Gildard his business consisted mainly of tenements. John Honeyman was articled to him, and by 1852-53 was allowed to have a small independent practice of his own. The Directory of 1853 describes him as being ' at Alexander Munro's, 213 Buchanan Street.'

Munro disappears from the directories in 1865. As Gildard makes no mention of emigration he had presumably died as he does not appear as being anywhere else in the 'Architect's, Engineer's and Building Trades' Directory' of 1868.
