Bio Notes: William Mackenzie was born in Dingwall in 1857. About 1872 he was articled to Alexander Ross of Inverness, and he subsequently attended Edinburgh University, commencing independent practice in Station Road, Dingwall in 1886. He was appointed part-time architect to the County of Ross and Cromarty in 1890, also acting as Inspector of piers and harbours.

By 1911 Mackenzie was carrying out both private and County work from an office in the County Buildings, Dingwall. Late that year he entered into partnership with Donald MacDonald, his assistant in independent practice since 1906. MacDonald was born on 7 November 1879 and articled to Ross & Macbeth from 1896 to 1901 and had been assistant to William Cumming Joass of Dingwall from 1902 to 1906. He was admitted LRIBA on 4 December 1911, his proposers being William Laidlaw Carruthers, Alexander Ross and Robert John Macbeth, all of Inverness. Mackenzie himself did not seek admission as LRIBA until 1925, when he was accepted without the need for proposers. By that time he was County Sanitary Inspector as well as Architect and Surveyor.

Mackenzie retired in the autumn of 1931 and died at Ben View, Conon Bridge on 12 March 1932.
