Bio Notes: John Henry Middleton was born on 5 October 1846 in York, the son of Cheltenham architect John S Middleton. He was educated at Cheltenham College and Exeter College, Oxford, and was first articled to his father then sent for experience to George Gilbert Scott's. He was admitted ARIBA on 1 March 1875, his proposers being Scott, Frederick Pepys Cockerell, and James Pigott Pritchett Junior. He assisted his father in his Cheltenham practice, and was probably responsible for the Glasgow work. After his father's death in 1885, he was appointed Slade Professor of Fine Art at Cambridge, 1886-1895, and in parallel appointed Art Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1893, but died at 2 Museum Residences on 10 June 1896 as a result of an overdose of morphia.
