Basic Biographical Details Name: | Geoffrey James Monro | Designation: | | Born: | 5 May 1907 | Died: | January 1985 | Bio Notes: | Geoffrey James Monro was born on 5 May 1907, the son of Charles Ernest Monro and grandson of James Milne Monro of Glasgow. He attended classes at Glasgow University from 1925 and at the Royal Technical College from 1926, studying under Thomas Harold Hughes. He spent his summer holidays working for A N Paterson & Stoddart in 1927 and 1928, and for his father and grandfather's firm of J M Monro & Son in 1929, joining the firm permanently after completing his BSc degree in 1930. He was admitted ARIBA in early 1932, his proposers being Hughes, Paterson and William James Smith.
After the firm won the competition for the de Haviland factory, he opened an office at Leavesden, Hertfordshire in 1940, moving to an office in Watford in 1943.
