Bio Notes: James Burnet was born about 1826 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. He may have trained in William Burn's office as his neo-Jacobean work is similar in detail to Burn's. By the mid-1850s he was working in Langholm where he was 'architect and superintendent of works'. Burnet was married to Annie Bell Burnet. His address at this time is given as Ewes Bank, Langholm.

He died on 8 May 1898. The practice was taken over by Robert Bell Burnet who was Burnet's fifth son. No further details of him are known.
