He was educated at Trinity College Cambridge and in Professor Stuart's workshop from 1885. He began his apprenticeship with Samuel Tucker in London, moving after one year to Sir Arthur Blomfield's office in 1887 where he remained for the next two years. He passed the RIBA qualifying exam in 1889 and was elected ARIBA on 31 January 1890, his proposers being Blomfield, John Macvicar Anderson and John Slater.
