Basic Biographical Details Name: | Allan John Meacher | Designation: | | Born: | 1870 | Died: | c. 1965(?) | Bio Notes: | Allan John Meacher was born at Islington, London in 1870, the son of John W Meacher, and was educated at King's College School, London, and New College Eastbourne. He was articled to Thomas Edward Collcutt in 1888, and passed the qualifying examination early in 1891, only three years into his apprenticeship, being admitted ARIBA on 8 June 1891, his proposers being Collcutt, James Brooks and Frederic Richard Farrow. He appears to have remained with Collcutt until February 1894: a copy of J K Collings's 'Details of Gothic Architecture' inscribed 'To A J Meacher from T E Collcutt, Feb 1894' now in the possession of David Walker, was probably a leaving present. At that time he was living at 24 Carleton Road, Tufnell Park, London.
Sometime in or before 1909 he inherited the estate of Marlee in Perthshire, where he had previously modernised the interior of the eighteenth century house in a very plain style about 1890. He appears to have carried on a small practice from there as he appears in 'Who's Who in Architecture' in 1914, 1923 and 1926, but no work at present is known. He lived on there, unmarried, until the mid-1960s. Physically he was then of very small stature, but he was probably somewhat taller in his youth. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 24, Carleton Road, Tufnell Park, London, England | Private | 1891 * | | | | Marlee House, Kinloch, Perthshire, Scotland | Private | c. 1909 | | |
