He had a distinguished record, winning the Academy's Gold and Silver Medals. He went into partnership with Edwin Alfred Rickards and Henry Vaughan Lanchester in 1896. The firm came into immediate prominence by winning the third premium in the Edinburgh North British competition and then in the following year by winning the Cardiff City Hall and Law Courts competition.
