Basic Biographical Details Name: | John Whitelaw Lockhart | Designation: | | Born: | 1877 | Died: | 1924 | Bio Notes: | John Whitelaw Lockhart was born in 1877 and articled to Morris & Hunter of Ayr on 1 September 1894, remaining with James Archibald Morris following the dissolution of the partnership in 1896. On completion of his apprenticeship in 1899 he secured a position in the office of James Salmon & Son as an improver, enabling him to study at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College under Charles Gourlay and at the Glasgow School of Art. He was promoted to assistant and subsequently chief assistant in Salmon's office, remaining in the same firm after it became Salmon Son & Gillespie in November 1903. He left in 1904 and returned to Ayr where he was taken into partnership by John Murdoch at 62 Sandgate Street, the firm name becoming John Murdoch & Lockhart.
Lockhart continued the practice under the same title after Murdoch's death in 1906 or 1907, but like so many others he appears to have suffered from the effects of the Finance Act of 1909 as he had given up his office and was practising from home by 1914. He was admitted LRIBA in the mass intake of 20 July 1911, proposed by John Bennie Wilson and the Glasgow Institute of Architects. He died in 1924. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 62, Sandgate Street, Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland | Business | 1911 * | | | | Auchinlee, Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland | Private | Before 1911 | After 1914 | |
