Bio Notes: Arthur Castings was born on 17 March 1853 at St Pancras, Middlesex (now London), the son of James and Mary Ann Castings. He became George Devey's chief draughtsman and was married by the time of the census of 1881. When Devey died on 4 November 1886, just as he was planning to retire, another senior assistant, James Williams, who may have been with Devey longer, was Devey's executor and received the larger bequest of £1,000; Castings received only £500. Incompatibility prevented them from forming a partnership and the practice was divided, Williams forming the short-lived partnership of Williams West & Slade at 3 Grosvenor Street and Castings setting up office at 61 Lincoln's Inn Fields to complete the work at Minley and St Paul's Waldenbury, the latter for the Earl of Strathmore. Williams subsequently took on W H Godfrey, first as an articled pupil and then as a partner. When Castings died in 1913 his practice was closed. He left his widow in financial difficulty and she asked Godfrey to sell her husband's archive on her behalf. Five drawings were sold to the Countess of Strathmore, and some others may have been sold in the same way by writing to Devey and Castings's clients, but the great majority were returned by Godfrey to re-unite the Devey archive, now in the RIBA Drawings Collection.
