Bio Notes: John William Kay was born c.1890 and articled to Charles Ower in Dundee from 1906 to 1910, remaining as assistant for a further year. During that time he attended classes at University College Dundee and studied under Patrick Hill Thoms at Dundee Technical College. In 1911 he obtained a post in H M Office of Works in Edinburgh under William Thomas Oldrieve, attending classes at Heriot-Watt College until he passed the qualifying exam in London in 1912. He was admitted ARIBA on 2 December 1912, his proposers being Oldrieve, Thoms and Thoms's partner William Fleming Wilkie. He remained at H M Office of Works until at least 1914.
