He was in practice in Glasgow as an architect at 101 West Nile Street from at least 1860. He visited Italy as his watercolours of Genoa and Siena were exhibited at the Glasgow Institute of Architects in 1863, as was a Cornish landscape. He died aged 62 at Juniper Bank, Langbank, Paisley on 21 April 1872. He was survived by his wife, Janet White Cumming, who died about three years later and by his son.
