He entered the office of John Harding, Diocesan Surveyor of Salisbury, as a pupil in 1862, and remained as assistant until 1872 when he commenced independent practice in the same city. He was admitted ARIBA on 3 January 1881 and elevated to FRIBA on 31 January 1887. He was also a Fellow of the Surveyors' Institution.
