Basic Biographical Details Name: | Hoare & Wheeler | Designation: | | Born: | 1898 | Died: | After 1926 | Bio Notes: | Edward Barclay Hoare was born in 1872 and educated at Harrow and Magdalen College, Oxford. He was articled to Edward Prioleau Warren from 1895 to 1898 and attended the British School in Athens, subsequently travelling in Sweden, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and Greece. At the end of his apprenticeship he commenced practice on his own account with another well-off apprentice of Warren's, Montague Wheeler. Wheeler had been born in 1874 and educated at Marlborough and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and had attended University College, the South Kensington Schools and Tufton Street Art School. He had travelled in France and Belgium.
Both were admitted LRIBA on 30 January 1911 and FRIBA in 1913. The architecture of the Duke's Tower at All Saints Episcopal Church, Inveraray reflects Warren's closeness to Bodley, whose pupil and assistant he had been in 1880-84.
Wheeler appears to have been practising alone by 1933, when he took Charles Melville Seth-Ward (born 1868) into partnership. This partnership lasted until 1935; Wheeler died two years later, on 15 September 1937.
In the 1950s the practice was run by Samuel Dennis Wheeler-Carmichael. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 22, Portman Street, London, England | Business | Before 1913 | After 1926 | |
