Basic Biographical Details

Name: Haxton & Watson
Designation:
Born: 1945
Died: c. 1987
Bio Notes: Andrew David Haxton was born in 1878 in St Andrews and came of a family of grocers. He was a product of the offices of Gillespie & Scott in St Andrews, Thomas Edward Marshall in Harrogate and Thomson & Sandilands in Glasgow, and was in partnership with William Walker (born 1881) from 1907 until the beginning of the First World War, when Walker enlisted and from which he never recovered. Haxton thereafter continued practice alone, his practice consisting mainly of co-operative society premises, local authority and industrial housing and cinemas, in which the firm had specialised from 1914 onwards, most of them accomplished Art Deco.

Haxton took Adam Elliot Watson, born 1908, into partnership circa 1945. Watson was a product of Glasgow School of Architecture and Wright & Wylie's office, and had spent the war in London on factory work. They continued to work together until Haxton's retirement in 1950.

Watson continued the practice until his retirement c.1973, the practice being continued thereafter by David Moir until c.1987.
